Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gives Back To Wounded Solider

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a very technical sport, it requires a lot of dedication and hard work but there is a hidden beauty in this killer game. Jiu Jitsu does not discriminate, no matter the age, gender, race or athletic ability of its participants, Jiu Jitsu will always satisfy in ways you’d never expect. Jiu Jitsu not only teaches one self defense and the basic techniques used in the martial arts it can also be used as a healing tool for the mind, body and spirit.

For US Army Staff Sgt. Tyler Anderson, tragedy struck during his second tour in Afghanistan that put him in a very difficult position for the rest of his life. He unfortunately lost his left leg, right below his knee along with a finger, as a result of an unexpected explosion. The long time wrestler now had to learn to cope with life with one less limb. Once he regained enough strength after surgery he started rehab at the Walter Reed Medical facility in Washington while apart of the Wounded Warriors Project. Anderson explained in an interview, “It’s a little scary to think that you might not be able to do the active things that you used to do.” It was then he found a light at the end of the tunnel, it was Jiu Jitsu. It helped bring him athletic satisfaction again and helped motivate his drive to succeed in his rehabilitation.

This is just one example of how Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can lift somebody’s spirit in more ways than just physically. Jiu Jitsu creates friendships, camaraderie, and discipline through demanding hard work and motivation where then lies the discovery of satisfaction in succeeding. The Purple Heart Sergeant, found a new way of athleticism through the martial arts of Jiu Jitsu. Because of Jiu Jitsu’s forgiving attitude and respect for all who are willing to participate Sgt. Anderson became enamored with the sport and continues to train to this day. Jiu Jitsu can help those who even may feel ill equipped to take part.

Here at Gracie Gym OC we believe in the fundamentals of living well, maintaining the highest quality of health possible, confidence in one’s self and to only think, believe and expect the best of yourself. Upon learning of Sgt. Andersons journey it has inspired our team even more to spread the message that Jiu Jitsu can be used for more than just a killer work out. We believe in the twelve commandments created by Master Carlos Gracie as follows at the bottom link. Come out and give Jiu Jitsu a chance, you may end up being surprised. You can and will receive great satisfaction by not only improving your physical strength, but also amplifying your mind, improving your endurance and finding spiritual ease. Come be a part of the team. Jiu Jitsu knows no boundaries.
